Can you get an iPhone with no deposit?
Yes. Lifeline service never needs a deposit, prepaid carriers skip credit checks and deposits, and a certified refurbished iPhone can be bought outright. Deposits usually apply only to postpaid plans for people with weak credit.
- Lease-to-own avoids credit checks but can cost 1.5–2× retail
- No legit offer asks for fees to “release” a free iPhone
- Refurbished iPhone 11–13 cost about $120–$320
What “no deposit” really means
A no-deposit iPhone offer means you don't pay a security deposit or upfront amount to get the phone. It usually applies to one of three situations: Lifeline service (no deposit ever), prepaid carrier promotions (no deposit, but you pay the first month), or postpaid financing for people with good credit (no deposit because the credit check passed).
People with thin or poor credit are often asked for a deposit on postpaid plans. The legit ways around that are below.
Legit no-deposit routes
| Route | Credit check? | Deposit? | What you pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lifeline + your iPhone | No | No | $0 service; you supply the iPhone |
| Prepaid switch deal | No | No | First month + taxes |
| Lease-to-own | No (usually) | Small initial payment | Much more than retail over time |
| Postpaid carrier | Yes | Only if credit is weak | $0 down with good credit |

Avoid these traps
“No deposit, no credit check, free iPhone 17 today” is the most common scam headline. Legit offers always name the carrier, plan and term. See how to spot scams.
- Lease-to-own can cost double the retail price. Read the total
- Sites asking for card details to “reserve” a free phone
- Social media giveaways that require a shipping fee
Best approach for bad credit
- Get free service first If you qualify, check Lifeline eligibility. It never needs a deposit.
- Buy a refurbished iPhone A certified refurbished iPhone 11–13 costs $120–$320 with a warranty.
- Or use prepaid Prepaid brands give real $0-down deals without checking credit.
If you do finance
Carrier “free iPhone” offers almost never hand you a phone outright. The carrier puts the full price of an iPhone 15 on a device payment plan, then cancels each payment with a matching monthly bill credit. Stay for the whole term and you pay nothing for the phone. Leave early and the remaining balance is due.
| Example | |
|---|---|
| Retail price | $730 |
| Term | 24 months |
| Monthly device charge | $30.42 |
| Monthly promo credit | −$30.42 |
| You pay for the phone | $0 if you stay the full term |
| If you leave after 12 months | about $365 still owed |
Why carriers ask for deposits?
A deposit protects the carrier when it lends you an expensive phone. If your credit history is short, has late payments, or can't be verified, a postpaid carrier may ask for a deposit or limit you to one financed phone. Prepaid carriers avoid the issue by charging for service upfront each month, so they don't need a deposit at all.
Lifeline providers never charge deposits because the service is paid for by the federal Universal Service Fund. The only cost you might see is an optional fee to upgrade the included phone.
No-deposit options compared
| Option | Monthly cost | iPhone models | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lifeline + your own iPhone | $0 | Any compatible iPhone you own | None |
| Prepaid switch promo | $25–$60 | Current and last-year models | None, phone may be locked |
| Refurbished + prepaid SIM | $15–$30 | iPhone 11–15 | None |
| Lease-to-own | Varies, often high | Any | Lease agreement |
If you rent-to-own, add up every payment before signing. A $700 iPhone can cost $1,100–$1,400 through lease-to-own.
