What is a free government SIM card?
If you already have a phone, most Lifeline providers will send a free SIM card, or an eSIM, instead of a new handset. You get the same free service on the phone you already know, including an iPhone.

Check compatibility first

Who qualifies?
There are two routes to eligibility: program-based (you already receive certain benefits) or income-based (your household earns no more than 135% of the poverty guidelines).

Activating your free SIM
- Check you qualify Confirm your benefit program or income using the eligibility checker.
- Pick a provider Choose a Lifeline provider that serves your area. Compare phones, data and coverage on our provider comparison.
- Apply through the National Verifier Apply on the provider's site or at checklifeline.org. Many applications are approved automatically by database checks.
- Upload proof if asked If the automatic check can't confirm you, upload a benefit letter or income proof. See documents you need.
- Activate your phone or SIM Your phone or SIM ships in about a week. Activate it and use it at least once every 30 days so the service isn't cancelled for non-usage.

Free SIM card for government phone: common questions
A free SIM card for government phone service is simply the provider's way of delivering Lifeline to a phone you already own. Nothing changes about eligibility: you still qualify through a benefit program or income, and you still get one benefit per household.
Some providers let you pick a SIM or eSIM on the application. Others send a universal three-in-one SIM that fits nano, micro and standard trays. If your iPhone is eSIM-only, choose a provider that supports eSIM activation before you apply.
Troubleshooting a new SIM
- “No SIM” message: reseat the card and restart
- “SIM not supported”: the phone is carrier-locked
- Calls work, data doesn't: update carrier settings (iPhone prompts automatically) or set the APN on Android
